High heels can make you feel instantly more glamorous, confident and sexy. They give the leg a more defined and shapely silhouette, and are the subject of fetishes for thousands of men and women around the world. However, high heels can also wreak havoc on your ankles, calves and back! However, there is no reason high heels can't be worn on a regular basis. Comfort and common sense are the keys to successfully working a heel. Just follow a few simple rules.
Comfort and practicality are important
High heels come in different shapes and styles; round toe, pointed toe, open toes, thick and square heel, thin and tapered heel. As a rule, thin heels are more difficult to balance on than block heels or wedges. Round, square and open toes are much more comfortable than pointed toes. If you really want to wear points, then make sure your toes are not sitting where the shoe starts to taper. You should be able to wiggle them comfortably.
Another factor to consider when choosing high heels is how closed they are around your foot; the more closed in your foot is the better. Sling-backs can easily slip off your foot and cause accidents. When choosing slip ons, make sure your heel doesn't separate too far from the back of your shoe when you walk. A slip-on that has a strap across the middle of your foot is best for keeping the shoe in place.
How is the heel positioned?
The shoe's heel should always sit directly under the middle of your heel. When you stand, all of your weight rests on the middle of your heel. If you buy a pair of shoes whose heels sits right at the back of the shoe and falls to the ground at a ninety degree angle, it is likely that the shoe will not be able to support the weight of your foot and will eventually collapse. The classic stiletto shape is better as the heel is positioned in exactly the right place.
If you want to go for height but don't want to put too much strain on your calf muscles, then try a small platform. Platform high heels have come a long way since the seventies and are no longer as garish as they used to be. The advantage of a small platform is that it reduces the distance between your toes and your heel and can feel more comfortable while making you feel taller.
Remember your posture
The only way to walk in high heels is with your head up and your shoulders back. This distributes the weight more evenly around your body and off your feet. You will also look a lot more confident and attractive.
If you are still feeling uncomfortable, there are products you can buy that make wearing high heels easier. Gel-based inserts which shift the weight off the ball of your foot and gently massage while cushioning are available from most chemists.
After-wear foot care
When removing your high heels after a day at the office or a night out, give your feet a gentle massage. It may be worth investing in a foot massager if you are a regular wearer. Also, stretch your calf muscles a little, do a few ankle rotations and try a few floor exercises that massage your lower back. These are the main areas where high heels place undue pressure.
If after trying these tips, you are still having problems, you may want to consider flats!
